2025 - Bannerman’s Island

Restoring a Trail to a Historic Site

Bannerman’s Island, or Pollepel Island, is a historic, rocky island in the Hudson River, 50 miles north of NYC. It is known for the dramatic ruins of a Scottish-style castle that Francis Bannerman VI built in 1901 to store military surplus. Managed by the Bannerman Castle Trust, it offers guided walking tours, kayaking, and special events. The island is accessible via boat tours from Beacon. Bannerman’s Island is a designated educational and historic site managed within the Hudson Highlands State Park. During the 2025 Season, the Jolly Rovers spent several days being transported to and from the island by boat to rebuild a seriously deteriorated narrow trail used by tourists. The Crew even spent one night camping out on the island among the ruins and wildlife!
